The following email was received from Lynn Metthe, Clinical Coordinator, who teaches the first-year speech-language pathology students at the University of Ottawa.

“A heart felt THANK YOU to Norm and Laura who volunteered to speak to 1st speech-language pathology and audiology students. Students were moved and inspired by their stories. ARE YOU A FORMER MEMBER OF SPEECHMASTERS OF OTTAWA?

Are you a former member of Speechmasters of Ottawa the self-help group for people who stutter that was very active in the 1980s and the early 1990s? This was a very large group that met in the Ottawa Rehabïlatation  Centre.  Marie Poulos was the speech therapist at the Stuttering Treatment Clinic at that time.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WHO STUTTER: SPONSOR OUR TEAM IN THE 2012 OTTAWA RACE WEEKEND

Once again the Ottawa Association of People Who Stutter – OAPWS is participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend as members of the Stuttering Treatment Clinic Team. This event is one of Canada’s most prestigious race events of the year and takes place on May 26th & 27th. The Team is under the umbrella of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s (OHF) “Run For A Reason” campaign.

Our team is raising funds to enable teens and adults attend speech therapy programs at the clinic. This clinic is located at the Rehab Centre of the Ottawa General Hospital and is only one of three such facilities in Canada to offer semi-intensive and intensive therapy programs for individuals who stutter. $3629 RAISED FROM THE RACE WEEKEND!

One of the most important events members of OAPWS participate in to raise money for the Marie Poulos Fund is Ottawa’s Annual Race Weekend held at the end of May. This fund enables individuals to attend intensive and semi intensive programs at Ottawa’s Stuttering Treatment Clinic.

MEMORIES OF MARIE POULOS

A memorial gathering in honour of Marie Poulos will be held on the grounds of Ottawa’s Rehabilitation Centre, Ottawa General Hospital on Sunday May 15 at 2:00 pm. Marie was a speech language pathologist who worked at the Rehab Centre’s Stuttering Treatment Clinic from 1979 until she was tragically killed in a car accident in 1991. She was 36.

She was 36. She was much loved and is still remembered by the hundreds of clients whose lives she touched through her work as a speech therapist. Marie was also well respected by her colleagues

MARIE POULOS BURSARY FUND

The Marie Poulos Bursary Fund is available to Ontario residents who do not have access to private insurance or personal funding to attend intensive and semi-intensive programs at the Ottawa Stuttering Treatment Clinic. The clinic is located in the Rehab Centre at the Ottawa General Hospital and is only one of three such facilities in Canada to offer intensive therapy programs for people who stutter.  Funds for the bursary are obtained through donations and fundraising activities, such as partnering in the showing of films and promoting of concerts.  We also speak to organization that wish to know more about stuttering and some of the therapies involved in treatment who in turn may see fit to make a donation, small or large, to the bursary; however, the making of a donation is not mandatory for us to speak to groups.
